Simple Spanish Reading - Obama Visits Cuba

If you are a Spanish teacher, you will probably take a few moments of class to discuss the current visit of President Obama to Cuba. It is truly historic and warrants some attention. I played some of his speech from Cuba for my classes. (And perhaps I should show them a clip of President Castro to balance out some of the rhetoric.)

I communicate to students that I think this is a really big deal. Cuba is so close yet we don't know much about it. Generations of Americans have been unable to travel there. It's a big mystery to most of us. I often find myself switching into English when discussing certain elements of the history, geopolitics, and economics of Cuba and U.S. relations. I remind them I am not an authority on the matter, but a student like them. I try to deliver an unbiased lesson based on what I know. Ultimately I want to leave them with one message after all is said and done: To learn as much as possible before forming a conclusion.

Esta semana Presidente Barack Obama está visitando Cuba. Está visitando la isla por tres días. Su visita a Cuba es histórica.

La última vez que un presidente visitó Cuba (durante ser presidente) fue en 1928, cuando Presidente Calvin Coolidge visitó la isla. Entonces, Coolidge fue a Cuba casi noventa (90) años atrás.
